Lawn bowling ready to roll

For the novice, instruction is provided by Level II coach Patricia McNair. Beginners are welcome and there are covered benches for spectators. Starting Thursday (May 31) from 1 to 3 p.m., you are invited to drop by and join the fun in friendly competition! Lawn bowling is open to all ages from 12 years and up.

It is just a month away when teams will gather for the Relay for Life event and all the fundraising is earmarked for the Canadian Cancer Society. Teams are busy raising funds for this special event that runs from Friday (June 22) at 7 p.m. to Saturday (June 23) at 7 a.m. Along with the teams, many volunteers are needed and if you can lend a hand, please check the Squamish Relay for Life by visiting www.relaybc.ca.

The Teen Book Club will meet at the Squamish Public Library on Wednesday (May 30) from 4 to 5 p.m. to discuss the book Winter Girls by Laurie Halse Anderson. The Evening Book Club will meet next Thursday (May 31) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the Glass Boys by Nicole Lundrigan.

The Co-Ed Biking Group meets each Wednesday at 10 a.m. outside the Squamish Seniors Centre, and men and women of all abilities are welcome. Bikes and helmets are required and there is no cost, but please pre-register by checking with Jodie at the front desk for more details. A reminder, the soup-and-sandwich day is Thursday (May 31) at noon, and if you purchase tickets before Thursday, you will be entered in the early bird draw. I believe all the tickets have been sold for the Spring Barbecue tomorrow (Friday, May 25) but if interested heck at the front desk at the centre.

The Rotary 200 Club Lottery winners for May are: Patrick Haberl ($100), Broam Finley ($120), Paul Turner ($130) and Tanya Lebans ($150).

Seniors interested in the bus trip to the River Rock Casino in Richmond on Wednesday (May 30) or the bus/river cruise to the town of Fort Langley on June 9 must phone Elaine at (604) 898-5463 by tomorrow (Friday, May 25).

It is still a couple of weeks away, but the annual Strawberry Social sponsored by the Hilltop House Support Society is planned for Saturday, June 2, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. I'll have more details next week.

A group of volunteers host young people from the Special Olympics for an hour of fun at the aquatic centre pool at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre each Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. More volunteers would be appreciated and if interested or for more information, please call Patricia at (604) 896-2277.

The Country Blend concert at the Seniors Centre last October was a real hit and the good news is the band is coming back to Squamish for concerts on Monday, June 18, at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, June 19, at 10 a.m. Don't be disappointed, purchase your tickets ($20 each) at the centre.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (May 29) at the Mamquam Forestry Road for a Birds of Prey to Squaw Loop hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub on Thursday (May 31) at 10 a.m. for a walk around Nexen Beach. For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.
