Letter: A great issue of The Chief

I’ve just finished reading the impressive article “Out of the Darkness” in The Squamish Chief (Nov. 27 edition), with its accompanying stories.

I’ve just finished reading the impressive article “Out of the Darkness” in The Squamish Chief (Nov. 27 edition), with its accompanying stories. I was struck by the courage of Councillor Susan Chapelle to come forward with such a sensitive and difficult personal issue, and by the quality of the overall reporting for this story and theme.
Rape and sexual abuse are much more prevalent then most people realize. Covering this topic is timely and much needed. When I read The Chief this week, I felt for the first time since moving to Squamish 2.5 years ago that I was reading a “real” newspaper, not a paper that writes only about ‘What’s On’ and the basic news of the community with little focus on larger, more complex issues.
Congratulations on a great issue of The Chief. Keep moving the paper forward.
Thank you Councillor Chapelle for opening the wound on your personal assault in such a public way in order to help your community be more aware of this traumatic crime that many women suffer from in silence.
