The mini-bike lane on Hwy 99 at the Porteau Bluffs, is a disaster waiting to happen.
Yesterday we came through that narrow section, heading north, with our 26 foot trailer.
In the opposite lane, a large gravel truck came as close as possible to the white line in order to pass a bicyclist.
The shoulder for the bike rider is only about 10 inches wide in this section.
If the bicyclist had swerved ever so slightly, the gravel truck would have had to come into our lane.
But we would have had no room to manoevre with the bluffs on our right.
We would all be facing a head-on collision.
How long do we wait until someone is killed or there is a terrible chain reaction of bike and vehicles resulting in multiple injuries and death?
I would like to suggest a possible solution.
In the lead up to the Olympics, the impossible became possible and Kiewet Construction did a marvellous job of building stretches of highway where no highway had been.
I’m not an engineer, but is it not possible to build a bike lane on the oceanside of the tracks?
Let’s use our imaginations to come up with a solution before it’s too late. Let’s not wait for someone to die!
