Letter: Concerned with Fortis permit denial

As a Squamish resident and taxpayer for the past six years, I want to add my voice to the concerns raised by former mayor Rob Kirkham in his recent letter on the Fortis Gas permit denial.

As a Squamish resident and taxpayer for the past six years, I want to add my voice to the concerns raised by former mayor Rob Kirkham in his recent letter on the Fortis Gas permit denial. Whether you are for or against the Woodfibre LNG proposal, we all should be concerned that the mayor and three council members can refuse to issue such a permit after all requirements have been met. Furthermore, we now face legal expenses as the district tries to defend its position in court – a huge waste of taxpayer dollars.

The former mayor and council brought Squamish three years of good governance and a progressive but cautious approach to new developments. Now we apparently face four years of a “not in my backyard” approach to progress and growth for Squamish.

This community needs the jobs and the tax revenue that Woodfibre will bring, all with minimal environmental and visual impact. What’s next from this mayor and council – kill the deal to sell the waterfront lands and start over?
