I’d like to offer my two cents’ worth the story about the proposed recreational fee increase, “District considers hiking recreational fees,” Dec. 10. It appears that the Squamish Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) has more of a voice than other users of the district’s facilities.
Both my daughters played soccer and are currently in the figure skating club. The difference between the registration fees of those specific sports is astronomical, and it doesn’t include the equipment that’s required for each sport respectively.
How can the members of SYSA complain about the costs involved and suggest it would make “the opportunity less accessible” if such a hike went through?
The skaters’ association is much smaller and pays much more in fees than the 900 to 1,000 soccer users. It would make a major difference to the coffers if the soccer users all had to pay a little more. Soccer is a very affordable sport. Talk to parents who drop more than $1,000 for registration fees, another $200 to $750 for figure skates and hundreds more for costumes, etc.
Raise the fees to the huge number of field users and keep the ice costs to a minimum, and that would make it a level playing field.
