LETTER: Drivers need to slow down

I must comment on the article in July 21 edition of The Squamish Chief. The thing that poses a safety hazard on the whole of the Sea to Sky highway is moronic behavior behind the wheel of a “lethal weapon” a.k.a. automobile or motorcycle.

I must comment on the article in July 21 edition of The Squamish Chief.

The thing that poses a safety hazard on the whole of the Sea to Sky highway is moronic behavior behind the wheel of a “lethal weapon” a.k.a. automobile or motorcycle. These people have little or no respect for their own safety, much less the safety of other drivers and residents of the communities along the route.

I live in Squamish and use the Sea to Sky two to three times per week, and travel between downtown and Garibaldi/Brackendale sometimes two to three times per day. Yet I am always amazed at the inconsiderate conduct of drivers. What don’t we understand about 60 and 70 km/h? Perhaps we should ask what street these people live on, so that we can drive through their communities at 90-120 km/h.

I love the drive to Vancouver and back. It is recognized as one of the most beautiful and scenic journeys in the world! I believe the trees and the median north of Lions Bay add to that beauty, so please, let’s not blame the trees for accidents that are a result of excessive speed and egos. Much as I am against “government surveillance” of any kind, the suggestion of photo radar by the mayor of Lions Bay may regrettably be the only viable solution.

Isn’t it sad that these few morons are contributing to the loss of our civil liberties, when really all it would take is a little respect, understanding, generosity, and responsibility. And in the end, what price is paid? Arriving to your destination maybe 10 to 15 minutes later.

Ron Newman,

Squamish
