Letter: Exporting gas does not reduce pollution

Any concern about the permit denial to Fortis Gas while meeting all requirements is just a noise about nothing because all will be decided by provincial government in the end, and anyone else’s opinion does not count.

Any concern about the permit denial to Fortis Gas while meeting all requirements is just a noise about nothing because all will be decided by provincial government in the end, and anyone else’s opinion does not count. It is in the same way that any previous council – whether good, progressive or cautious – had no basis for government decision.

This is not an in-my-back-yard issue. It is that we need to stop pumping carbon into the atmosphere. Everybody knows that this is causing our global warming disaster.

Shipping gas and oil and coal out of the country does not make world pollution any less. Of course it would be good to have more jobs, which we had with the pulp mill in Woodfibre. But when the pulp mill closed, there was a tax loss and no one considered making an arrangement for a rest on tax collection until things picked up again and the mill could start up again, so we got a permanent tax  loss.

As to killing the deal on the waterfront lands, one has to say: What deal? So far, all we have is expense.
