I could not disagree more with the letter “Taxpayers want a spray park” published on Aug. 24.
We do not need another taxpayer-funded (water) hole to throw money into when we are at the terminus of nearly countless natural water parks called “rivers.” We also already have a community pool, which certainly costs much more than it generates in revenue. Such an endeavour would, indeed, be a total waste of money for taxpayers.
Nonetheless, I can respect that different members of society want different facilities in their community. However, the sense of entitlement and condescending tone towards the mayor and council is quite offensive.
I have been involved with the mountain bike community for years (note, not in Squamish yet). Such organizations receive grants, and also put their money where their mouths are by fundraising and putting on events to pay for infrastructure that will indeed benefit their cause.
The same clubs also spend countless hours volunteering with axe and shovel to make their dreams come to fruition.
Perhaps instead of whining and demanding something, a more proactive approach would see the results you desire? Are you prepared to pick up a shovel and spend the hours planning and actually doing the work? Corporate sponsorship sounds like a great way to get what you want – you just have to actually convince the right people that it is a good idea.
