LETTER: Goodbye, Squamish

After standing at the top of Mt.

After standing at the top of Mt. Erskine on Salt Spring Island on Friday and after looking in three different directions: one toward Squamish, one towards Duncan and one toward Nanaimo and northwards, I truly realized what I have been thinking for about a year now is true. It is time to fix up the house and get the hell out of Squamish.

It’s time to move to Vancouver Island.

Squamish is so lacking in so many things. There is no vibrant waterfront like there is in every community that I was in or going through between Campbell River and Salt Spring Island.

Squamish being on the edge of Howe Sound has by far the most lack-luster waterfront anywhere that I have ever been to in the world.

I was at the Salt Spring Island open air market yesterday (Mar 31). Was it vibrant! It was held in a park right on the waterfront and was easily twice the size of the piddly market that we have here in Squamish.

In Parksville, they even have a unique way of getting people into the markets by hiding free custom glass globes in logs along the beautiful board walk above the high tide line.

If you find a specially marked one you take it to another vendor where they will give you another one plus you get to keep the one you found. Also, it is so much cheaper to live on Vancouver Island. Gas is cheaper (you don’t get screwed at the pump because of living close to a resort like Whistler ). Food is cheaper. The pace of life is so much slower as well.

Squamish is just too behind the times.

The current council is so out to lunch as to the needs of this town. I congratulate Peter Kent for making a smart decision and moving out of here. Oh, and one more thing... I ran into a cashier in Save-On-Foods in Campbell River that I recognized from living here in Squamish. She tells me that it seem like half of Squamish has moved there. Hmmmm, what does that tell you about Squamish?
