Letter: Here's a better idea than a banner contest

I remember being blown away by the Revelstoke street banners a number of years ago. They were quirky, colourful, whimsical and each one was different. No contest.

In Revelstoke, all adults, children, non-profit organizations and businesses – not just “artists” – are encouraged to showcase their creative talent by creating a banner. They pay a fee to participate. Groups of friends or workmates can get together and collaborate. Revelstoke promotes participation by telling residents not to worry, that the on-site artist will guide and advise participants on painting the banner. The theme this year: Weather and Our Environment – not a word about “branding” their town.

Banners are displayed on city streets for the season for everyone to enjoy and the individual gets to take the banner home for their own display.

Personally, I would have loved to have these banners auctioned off or put up for sale at a community event with the owners’ permission. I know for certain I would have bought several, had this option been available. A visitor to a town like Squamish couldn’t leave with a more unique souvenir.

I think Revelstoke got it right. It’s all about inclusion and celebrating community.
