Re: “Rafe Mair questions LNG,” letter to the editor (Feb. 18).
Anyone who believes that an agreement signed by many people and nations to reduce climate change is an immediate statement to stop the use of all fossil fuels is pretty naive. It will take years to make the conversion to an alternative – I have been told 30 years on the optimistic side and 75 years on the extreme side. This may vary, as it is difficult to guess, but I believe it makes sense.
If you oppose fossil fuels, simply don’t use them. This is the same as any market item but you will need to accept the way your lifestyle will be changed.
In my opinion, liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be an interim measure to fuel the planet in a much better way than we currently have with the traditional fuels and hopefully a good alternative will be found in the future but it’s not there yet.
It is suggested by many that LNG is the best solution of the available fossil fuels to reduce carbon dioxide and reduce deadly particulates in the atmosphere. I have not seen anything of credibility that suggests anything to the contrary.
I also have noticed that when a process is established that may not go your way, some will say it’s “unfair” and that government is not listening.
This is a different government than we had last year. By all accounts, they seem to be listening and stepping back to see if something should be done differently. I can only hope they do the right things such as protecting our environment, balanced by protecting our economic viability.
I certainly support the LNG concept for the province and also the Woodfibre LNG project as long as it is done responsibly.
