I read with some interest that the municipality is talking about suspending the tax free status of the Oceanfront development, with the exception of one councillor.
I was applauding this in my mind and trying to figure out how much of our tax increase would be reduced and then I read the municipality is embarking on a $3-million IT upgrade.
This is done with very little public knowledge or approval. There must be a public approval process of any expenditure over a certain threshold.
Who is on the line who can guarantee that number? It could be a consultant, or nobody, as I bet it won’t be a municipal employee.
There are so many examples of government projects costing two, three or even 20-times the estimate. Why will this be different – because a bureaucrat says so?
This municipality has a history of being over budget. Are they so out of touch with reality and in some parallel universe this is OK?
I am sure most residents can quickly name off a whole lot of projects that are higher on the list than this. I bet you $300,000 a year over 10 years would be a nice subsidy for transit to Vancouver, but instead we can have more blue trees.
I just got the emergency preparedness kit – what a waste. How much did that cost us? Thank goodness we got that since all the past residents of Squamish were very lucky to survive without this kit.
We are becoming less responsible for choices and allowing more and more choices made for us by government. I forget who said this but it is fitting: “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”
