Letter: Public spaces in Squamish are crucial

'Common spaces, places where people can congregate for free to relax or connect with others and talk trivia or about things that really matter, are critical to the wellness of a town.'

The new parklet being installed in downtown Squamish.

I was surprised and disappointed to read [in the editorial, “We need a paradigm shift on parking, Squamish” published on March 18] about the outcry regarding the new seating area downtown by OurSquamish.

Common spaces, places where people can congregate for free to relax or connect with others and talk trivia or about things that really matter, are critical to the wellness of a town. I had thought that a town with such a young demographic, with theoretically a commitment to the environment, fitness, and building community relationships, would be delighted to have an additional tiny commons spot. Not so, apparently.

The spot is a direct challenge to the commodification of all lands; it’s a political act of resisting privatization of all space. Thank you to those who built it and to those who offered the space. Well done. I’m happy to walk a block or two.
