LETTER: Reasons for fewer salmon

The Squamish Chief’s front page story on June 29 says that chinook salmon have declined since the spit was built.

The implication is that building of the training dike is the reason fewer fish go up the river. There are fewer salmon everywhere as a result of many things, not the least of which is overfishing and that we have known for over 70 years.

Yet it was very late when any authority considered slowing the fishing. Had that happened in those early days we might not have had concern today over

the lack of catch.

The paper’s article does not say why the narrowing of the river entrance holds fish back from coming into the river, yet allows 6,000 to pass. Can anyone imagine

why that is all that passed? Why that is all that came from the ocean?
