I write this letter after dinner, during which we used a glass jug with the first initial of my surname engraved upon it. As I looked at it upon the table, I remembered, as I do often, a splendid group of Squamish women whom I taught as an instructor for Capilano College in the very late 1970s. They were all learning to pursue careers in office work. My role was to teach them typewriting. That Christmas, they gave me two martini glasses and an appropriate cocktail jug all engraved with the letter S. Nearly 40 years later, after many years in Toronto with much international business travel, we use that jug in semi-retirement on Salt Spring Island. I never use it without thinking of the students who gave it to me so long ago. If any of my former students are still in Squamish, I should wish them to know that I remember them fondly with the hope that their lives have been full of blessings o’er the past nearly 40 years.
