On behalf of Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), I’d like to congratulate the District of Squamish for committing to make Squamish a healthier and safer community. Research has shown that most of our health is determined by where we live, work, learn and play and when municipalities put their mind to it they can make a big impact on health.
Over the past few years, VCH has worked closely with Squamish to add a health lens to the Official Community Plan (OCP) which sets a vision for how Squamish will develop over the next 25 years and can guide decisions on planning, land use and community services.
The OCP highlights three key health issues for Squamish:
1. Early childhood development: Squamish is a growing community of families with young children making it vital to prioritize investments and partnerships that promote the healthy growth and development of children during this critical period, since we know it will affect their health throughout their entire lives.
2. Active transportation: ensuring a safe and accessible system that supports walking and cycling for all ages and abilities. Although Squamish is a physically active community, it relies heavily on vehicles which impact health in terms of air quality, sedentary behaviour and even mental health. VCH is pleased to see that Squamish has been proactive in supporting families with school walking and cycling initiatives.
3. Food systems: increasing access to healthy, affordable food through supporting local production and agriculture by partnering with local groups like Squamish Food Policy Council and Squamish CAN. Healthy eating and food security promote social, physical, and mental well-being at all ages and stages of life.
The OCP shapes Squamish’s future growth in a way that is healthy and sustainable and aims to foster a high quality of life for current and future residents. We look forward to working further with the District and creating an even healthier Squamish in years to come.
A public drop-in event will be held on Wednesday, May 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre to speak up for health.
