LETTER: Technology? Don’t be fooled

Our mayor’s view of the advantages of technology changes (in her column in last week’s Chief) does not acknowledge any of the downside to the changes.

Our mayor’s view of the advantages of technology changes (in her column in last week’s Chief) does not acknowledge any of the downside to the changes.

One other major change mankind has made was the invention of the automobile – to say there is only rainbows and lollipops in that one is not looking very close.

It should not be council’s business to speculate on the future (wherever it may be headed), but only to provide services for the taxpayers’ current needs. The future will come soon enough and rather than speculate on requirements, find out what they are and react at that time.

Council seems to think they have a better crystal ball than the taxpayers and are potentially wasting a whole lot of taxpayer money. Many are too young to remember Betamax and VCR, but that didn’t turn out well for Betamax or its proponents and it was superior technically.

To say this will make a more equitable society is strongly debatable. Just think of all the lost jobs in the transportation sectors. We should not be letting technology development be the driver of our society. Like any business, the software companies concern is not to benefit society, but only to make a buck.

A mine in a park is just as bad as anything that reduces a necessity of humans to think.

Because the shiny object is called technology some members of society think different rules apply.

I don’t know how many times someone has said to me “I consider this technology” (a phone). It is technology to the user the same as a TV is to the watcher – it is just another shiny toy.

If council and the bureaucracy concentrated on the needs of the current residents they wouldn’t be so time constrained.

The developer of the waterfront development saying we must strike quick or miss our opportunity is the same spiel the salesperson who sold me

the refrigerator used.

You have a limited amount of time to take advantage of this – any salesperson knows this as another closing technique. Don’t be so gullible!

With the high prices of real estate here for anyone to  think students will flock here – you are dreaming.

I see our council is putting forward another AAP, is this the third or fourth time for getting around the electorate in this way?
