I want to thank The Squamish Chief for its continuing interest in covering the concerns of lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer+ (LGBTQ+) individuals in Squamish and its ongoing support of Safe ’n’ Sound Squamish, a new LGBTQ+/straight alliance organization committed to providing resources and education to the public.
It was with great interest that I read The Squamish Chief’s March 25 editorial, “A town transformed.” As highlighted in the editorial, Squamish has certainly become a more inclusive, compassionate place. And while that progress is encouraging, it should also be noted that we still have much work to do to create a more caring community that embraces and celebrates everyone. Sadly, some LGBTQ+ individuals face bullying, harassment, even physical violence here. Many LGBTQ+ people in Squamish still feel unsafe and alienated. LGBTQ+ youth are especially at risk of being ostracized and isolated. That is why it is critical we come together to educate ourselves about LGBTQ+ concerns and build support systems that benefit our entire community.
Safe ‘n’ Sound was recently formed to celebrate and honour our LGBTQ+ citizens, their families and allies through awareness, education, visibility and resources. To that end, we will be holding a conference – entitled “Someone Like Me” – on May 9 at Howe Sound Secondary. The conference will include workshops, panel discussions, brainstorming sessions and a keynote speaker, renowned Canadian comedian Elvira Kurt. This gathering, the first of its kind in Squamish, will afford an exciting opportunity for residents to share information and experiences, facilitate better communication, make new friends, strengthen alliances, and provide support for families. I encourage others to attend this worthy event. For more information go to www.safensoundsquamish.com.
The cornerstones of any thriving society are freedom, diversity, compassion, understanding, kindness, respect, dignity and love. We want Squamish to be a model for the world – an inspirational, enlightened place that acknowledges the uniqueness and beauty of each and every individual. We invite others to join Safe ’n’ Sound in shaping Squamish’s future, a future that cherishes all who call this incredible place “home.”
