Letter: We are run by technocrats and bureaucrats

I watched the last council meeting with the Fortis application for test hole drilling in the estuary. It has become painfully obvious we are a society run by technocrats and bureaucrats. Lip service is given to the people, but really, we have no say.

Councillor Doug Race says it has to be approved or the people will suffer pain. Really? As an alternative fight this, get rid of a lot of the senior bureaucrats (think of the money saved in not having to build a new municipal hall) and let’s put the public back in democracy.

Our fathers and grandfathers fought a war against this type of oppression, and certainly what we will have to do is nothing in comparison.

We are letting decisions be made by people who aren’t going to be alive in 50 years, so they have no skin in the game. Whether you are pro or anti, the process is dictatorial and that has to be fought. Change comes from the bottom-up; very rarely is it top-down.
