Letter: Will a restored estuary attract cougars?

Re: “Part of estuary to be blocked off for six months: Squamish River Watershed Society begins restoration project in March,” Feb. 26. I am concerned. Having an estuary in a growing urban area may prove wrong in time.

I am concerned. Having an estuary in a growing urban area may prove wrong in time. An estuary is a natural place for predators to come and feed. Restoring it will make it a good habitat for predatory animals and may result in cougar attacks. Children can be there, so it’s not wise. People should give this a second thought.
I suggest that growing blueberries, raspberries or cranberries may be a better solution. This would provide summer jobs for students and also, in time, some tax revenue.
