About four years ago we had a movie theatre located on Mamquam Road but it was taken down due to the fact that the theatre didn’t make any business.

Over the past couple of years, more people have been moving to Squamish and the population has been growing. Ever since the population of the community grew, people wanted to see another movie theatre again. Having a movie theatre back would be a good idea because we wouldn’t have to go to Whistler or Vancouver anymore to see a film and it saves gas for us so we wouldn’t pollute the environment. To see a movie theatre in Squamish would be great because it would bring people together. It would be a place where more people could go for socializing and would bring the community together.

In 2012, when the movie theatre was still in Squamish, there wasn’t much business and the reason for that was because there weren’t as many people as there are now. It’s tempting to think that sitting in a dark theatre staring at a massive white sheet won’t matter when everyone has 40-plus inch 4K TVs. But, in your own home there are too many things that could interrupt you, such as your roommates, family members who talk to you loudly, phones, computers, pets, and the temptation to get up and raid the fridge, like I do, every 20 minutes. People who try their hardest to give their attention to a livingroom screen fail due to the fact that you’re not in a place that you need to be quiet around others.

Another advantage that you have with a movie theatre is the surround-sound system that makes movies sound 10 times better. For example, if you’re watching a horror movie in a movie theatre and there’s a scare, it will probably scare you more than watching it on your couch at home with the speaker in front of you. If I’m watching a movie with jumpy scares in it at a movie theatre, I would get scared a lot because there’s a bunch of speakers around me and one behind me. This proves we need a movie theatre back in Squamish.
