Starting Thursday (Sept. 4) the Squamish Public Library will be offering school-aged storytimes. All school-aged children can head down to the library every Tuesday and Thursday from 2-3 p.m. for some fun stories and crafts. No registration is necessary for the free, one-hour storytimes.

This year the 20th annual Brackendale Fall Fair takes place at the Farmers’ Institute Park on Government Road this Saturday (Sept. 6) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is something for all ages, from the petting section, zucchini races, hay wagon rides, mini golf, exhibitor’s tent and of course, great entertainment all day. This year there will be 70-plus vendors on site including many food vendors. You support Squamish Search and Recue when you buy one of their delicious hamburgers or hotdogs. This group is also responsible for first aid on the grounds. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and youth aged 13 to 17 years, $2 for youth six to 12 years and free for kids five and under.

Diane Rogers, the editor of the B.C. Genealogical Society will be at the Squamish Public Library tonight (Thursday, Sept. 4) at 6:30 p.m. Her introduction to the genealogy workshop will be of interest to many residents. Please note the library will be open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning on Sept. 7.

There is still time for individuals and choirs to enter the Youth Singing Competition sponsored by the British Columbia/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion. Winners will sing “O, Canada” and “Amazing Grace” at the Legion’s Salute to Veterans and Military Valour during the B.C. Lions half-time show at B.C. Place on Friday, Nov. 7. Along with Keep Fit classes starting the week of Sept. 15 at the Squamish Seniors Centre, art classes, international dance, Spanish and yoga will begin on Tuesday (Sept. 16) and the Genealogy Club meets on Wednesday (Sept. 17).

Nearly 200 children were enrolled in the weekly Summer Reading Club at the Squamish Public Library during July and August. Special guest events included Meg Toom who gave a talk about the Bear Aware Program, illustrator Eliska Liska helped the group create some awareness masks and sound artist Hasan Hujairi helped the children manipulate sounds they recorded. Nearly 80 children received certificates and medals for keeping up their summer reading. Thanks go out to the Reading Club leaders Kevin Sousa and Lindsey Guy.
