LNG has been a long yak with proponents saying how wonderful, how world-class and environmentally sound and now, that it will have no effect on existing electric users (Woodfibre LNG letter, Chief, May 29). It is good to hear that no subsidy is being considered. That, of course, will mean that they will pay the same high rate of 12+cents per KWH as many households in Squamish do and no special bulk rate will be considered. They might also pay their share of the water usage fee that B.C. government extracts from Hydro.
However, one way or another, there will be a heavy use of energy to make the conversion to shipping gas out of the country for the sake of extra profit for a few and adding more pollution to the world. This would not be good for Canada. It would only be an artificial increase in stock market value. Keeping it here and using it here, or at least enough for our needs, would be the right thing to do — as it would be if we stopped shipping our oil out of the country, kept it here and refined it here, or at least enough for our needs.
This does not fit the climate change denial folks who think they own the products and can do with it what they will.
