Local talent on display this weekend

The Eagle Eye Theatre is the location tonight (May 13) at 7:30 p.m. for the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association's (HSPAA) Star Search 2011, when young people of all ages will showcase their musical talents for the judges and appreciative audience.

This community is filled with talent and the Sea to Sky Singers are presenting their spring concert tomorrow evening (May 14) at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday (May 15) at 2 p.m. at the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG). Choir director Veronica McPhee said a number of local artists will also be participating in "Songs at an Exhibition." Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet and at the BAG at $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

Tomorrow (May 14), the Squamish Valley branch of the B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) will have an Open House, garage sale and barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SPCA animal shelter on Government Road. Pets available for adoption will be featured and it is hoped many will find a new home.

Anyone with items for the garage sale are asked to take them to the shelter before 11 a.m. or phone the shelter at (604) 898-9890 and leave a message. Please note, the SPCA initially said the event was to take place on Sunday but has changed the date to Saturday.

The annual Children's Health Fair will be held tomorrow (May 14) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The event includes kindergarten immunization, car seat and bike safety checks, games and face painting and more.

To meet membership requests, the Squamish Seniors Centre is planning a Spring Fling Dinner and Dance on Friday (June 3) from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. A delicious dinner of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings will be prepared by Chef Greg Van Rierdon. The music for your dancing pleasure will be provided by Sound Selection with Chris and John French spinning the platters - yes, there will be vinyl! A no-host bar will be available. The tickets ($22) are now on sale at the Centre at 1201 Village Green Way, the same location as the Clock Tower Café. Get a party of friends together, not just members, as all are welcome, and come with your special musical requests ready.

On Wednesday (May 18), the monthly birthday celebration will be held at 2 p.m. at Hilltop House, where Linda Czegledi, Mary Hurren, Cameron Tanner, Bud Zorn, Randy Ferbey and Ellen Elliasen will be honoured.

The Squamish BMX Racing Club is holding a Race for Life event on Sunday (May 15) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the track. All proceeds will go to member Nick Geddes, a 17-year-old from Whistler who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Last year, the Race for Life raised $3,140 and the club is hoping to beat that amount this year.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (May 18) at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Monday (May 16) at 6:30 p.m. for a plant exchange. The monthly meeting will follow at 7 p.m. with the program to be announced.

The Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital had its annual spring raffle draw on May 6 and the lucky winners were: Eric Sandberg ($250), Donna Pederson ($175) and D. McLeod ($100). The WA thanks everyone for their support. New stock in the gift shop includes many items made in Canada.

Squamish Hospice Society is the designated charity for Pepe and Gringo's charity on Wednesday (May 18). Ten per cent of food sales on that day will be donated to Hospice.
