Mini Rail Days return

It's that time again for the annual Mini Rail Days at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Sunday (Aug. 7) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when three or more visiting engines will be operating for your enjoyment. The mini-rail rides are $3.

The mini-rail rides are $3.50 each and the admission to the grounds is $15 for adults, $40 per family, $12 for seniors, $10 for students and free admission for children five years and under. Do visit the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre, the home of the famous Royal Hudson and many restored cars.

Another event not to be missed is the ninth annual Copper and Fire Festival at the Britannia Mine Museum on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 6 and 7). On Saturday, the Concert in the Mill will feature live music and fire dancers from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased at the Museum Gift Shop or at the door.

The event on Sunday (Aug. 7) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will feature artist demonstrations and exhibitions. Included are activities for the children, and there will be live music on site.

The next Interpretive Walk led by Dawn Green is planned for Monday (Aug. 8) at 9:30 a.m. and the location is the North Vancouver Outdoor School. On Wednesday (Aug. 10), the next Caregivers Support Group meeting will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Seniors Centre. ISS of B.C. is offering ELSA (English Language Services for Adults) in our community for free. Anyone who is a newcomer to Canada, a naturalized citizen, or a refugee claimant, 17 or older, approved for permanent residency or assessed at a language level from low beginner to intermediate is eligible. On Thursday (July 28) a farewell luncheon was held for Sasha Molby at the Seniors Centre. Sasha has been the Keep Fit instructor for the past five years (three at Brennan Park Recreation Centre and two at the new Seniors Centre). The well-loved expert instructor will be truly missed by all we seniors but we wish her well in her future endevours. Sasha was presented with a bouquet of flowers and other gifts. Her last classes at the Centre will be held on Aug. 18.

If you are wondering what to do this Sunday evening (Aug. 7), why not head up to the Brackendale Art Gallery and enjoy the Acoustic Jam session from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Grandparents' Days at the Seniors Centre are each Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon and includes Wii games, crafts, and lawn or carpet bowling. The cost is $5 and please register at the centre. Lawn bowling is each Tuesday at 10 a.m. and Thursday at 1 p.m. and everyone is welcome. Carpet bowling is each Monday and Friday at 1 p.m. Pre-register for croquet, bocce and pickle ball.

The WOW group is carpooling to Whistler for their ride next week and everyone is asked to be at the Canadian Tire parking lot before 9 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 8). For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

AdventureSmart, Squamish Search and Rescue, Bear Aware and B.C. Parks are holding their annual TrailSense Day at the Stawamus Chief on Sunday (Aug. 7) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Backcountry safety and Search and Rescue prevention will be the focus of the day, and there will be prizes to be won!

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at 8 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 9) at the corner of Ross and Government roads for a Tricount Meadows hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

Attention all 'tweens. The Squamish Public Library will be hosting a Wii Gaming Event on Wednesday (Aug. 10) from 2 to 4 p.m. This is open for ages 10 and up. There will be Wii gaming and prizes!
