Musical adventures coming our way

There is an excellent article in last week's Chief (written by Steven Hill) on the upcoming concert "Goin' Home" at St. John's Anglican Church on Saturday (May 25) at 7:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association (HSPAA) and features the Vancouver Jubilate Chamber Choir conducted by Dr. Larry Nickel. It is all-Canadian content and includes the song "Miracle at Play" by Joanna Schwarz and music by former resident Dave Baker. Tickets are available at Billie's Flower House and at the door at $15 adults and $10 for seniors. There is no charge for students.

Another interesting concert is planned at the Britannia Mine Museum also on Saturday (May 25) at 7:30 p.m. when the NEWmatica Music Concert group will perform in the historic mill building. This concert is sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts. Tickets are $25 for adults and $18 for students and seniors, and available at the door.

A few tickets are available for the annual barbecue at the Seniors Centre on Saturday (May 25) from 5 to 9 p.m. and the cost is $10 each. The Squamish Fiddlers will perform during the evening. The co-ed biking group meets each Wednesday at 10 a.m. for their weekly ride and new members are always welcome.

On Thursday (May 30) from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the Squamish Public Library and Quest University monthly lecture series continues in the library. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jonathon Warner and his subject will be: Economists Telling Tales: Can Stories Really Change How The Economy Functions?

The annual Mother's Day raffle sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital was held at the gift shop at the hospital on May 10 and the happy winners were: Sue Ritchie ($250), Chris Kearny ($175) and Brian Jackobs ($100). The Auxiliary thanks the community for their continued support.

The Brennan Park Recreation Centre ice arena is now a dry slab and roller skating is now in. Skates are required and it is recommended you wear a helmet and pads, and have fun on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Mondays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Regular admission rates apply. Summer program guides are now available by checking www.squamish.ca or drop by the recreation centre.

Tickets are still available for the North Shore Light Opera Society's performance of the Pirates of Penzance at the Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver. Lead singer Kayla Matzen from the Squamish Academy of Music said tickets are available for May 24 and 29, and June 1 at 8 p.m., and a matinee on May 26 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $20 for students. Tickets are available at the music academy on Second Avenue or at www.phtheatre.org.

VISUALS, the Squamish Valley Artists Society, has an art display a the Squamish Adventure Centre featuring the talents of local painters Sonia Richardson and Leilani Finch, and glass artist Jennifer Blair until Sunday (June 2). This is Part 3 of a series of shows organized by VISUALS with the Squamish Sustainability Corp. and the gift shop at the adventure centre. The community is invited to visit and enjoy the talent displayed in the works of these three women, and items are available for sale through the gift shop. The art display at the adventure centre will change every four weeks.

The WOW Riders will meet at the Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. on Monday (May 27) to carpool to Park Royal for a ride to Granville Island. The group will only go if the weather is good, otherwise it will be a local ride with an early coffee. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (May 28) at the Mamquam Forest Service Road for a Birds of Prey to Squaw Loop hike. For more information, cal Heather at (604) 892-9003.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday (May 30) at Canadian Tire for a walk through the Community Gardens to the Squamish Golf Course. For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.
