Olympians honoured in downtown parade

Celebrate Squamish's Olympians tomorrow (April 17) at noon with a parade on Cleveland Avenue from Winnipeg Street to the Squamish Junction Park.

Celebrate Squamish's Olympians tomorrow (April 17) at noon with a parade on Cleveland Avenue from Winnipeg Street to the Squamish Junction Park. This is a chance to meet the athletes, enjoy music from local musicians, take part in the barbecue and let the kids enjoy the children's activities.

Join Garibaldi Elementary students for A Splash of Colour Wednesday (April 21) from 3 to 8 p.m. This is the third annual school-wide art show, and the gymnasium will be once again transformed into a beautiful and colourful art gallery. There will also be a parent-run student art auction in the hallways. Everyone is welcome.

Students in piano, voice and choral from Britannia Beach to Pemberton taking part in the annual Sea to Sky Music Festival this weekend are striving to give their very best as they showcase their talents for the adjudicators. Today (April 16) piano classes are ongoing from 3 to 8 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church. Classic vocal classes are held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow (April 17). The cost per session is $2 each or $10 for a festival pass. The morning will feature classical music and the afternoon musical theatre and duets.

The Hi-lites Gala will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday (April 18) at St. John's Anglican Church when all gold medal performers from Squamish and Whistler will perform. Admission for this concert is $7. The Music Festival is sponsored by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association.

The Healthy Brain Group will meet on Tuesday (April 20) at the Mental Health Centre from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 38075 Second Avenue. Seniors wishing to attend are asked to call Delores at 604-892-6400.

On Tuesday (April 20) the Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the Stawamus Chief parking lot at 9 a.m. for a hike up the Chief. New members are always welcome and for more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

An invitation is extended for you to join the staff at the Squamish Public Library on Wednesday (April 21) at 7 p.m. to welcome author Jerry Auld. Jerry's first novel Hooker & Brown was shortlisted for the prestigious Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature and for the Banff Mountain Festival Book Award.

Take in the Spring Dance at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 tonight (April 16) at 6:30 p.m. that includes cocktails, plant auction and dancing from 8 p.m. to midnight. Munchies will be available and admission is $5 each. Just a reminder, there is bingo at the Legion on Monday (April 19) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday (April 21) the Squamish Food Bank will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The Tantalus Senior Walking Club will meet at the Dog Pound on Government Road for a walk up Amblepath and over the Mamquam Trail on Thursday (April 22) at 10 a.m.

The Squamish Women's Health Network is hosting The Natural Medicine Cabinet, a free evening with Registered Clinical Herbalist Evelyn Coggins. It will be held on Earth Day on Thursday (April 22) from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library. Sign up now at the library (604-892-3110) to reserve your seat.

Brennan Park Recreation Centre is the location for the annual kids toy, clothing and sports sale tomorrow (April 17) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The monthly soup and sandwich day at the Squamish Seniors' Centre is Thursday, April 29, at 12 noon and tickets at $7 for members and $8 for non-members are now on sale. Anyone interested in Genealogy is invited to the Centre on Monday (April 19) at 1 p.m. and will continue on the third Monday of each month. Computers for Beginners also starts Monday (April 19) and each Monday and Thursday at 1 p.m. For more information, please call the Centre at 604-848-6897.

The Squamish Public Library is holding its annual Kindergarten REception on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. All kindergarten students and their parents are welcome to attend this fun free event. Children are invited to wear their pyjamas and to take their favourite stuffed toy along. The monthly birthday gathering at Hilltop House will be held on Wednesday (April 21) at 2 p.m. when Olga Metzler, Austin Griffiths, Joe Ronayne, Dietrich Henschel and Isabella McLaughlin are honoured.

The Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital are selling tickets for the Annual Spring Mother's Day draw. They are available at the gift shop at the hospital and members will be selling tickets at Save-On-Foods this weekend and at Wal-Mart on April 24 and 25. The first prize is $250, second is $175 and third is $100 and will be drawn at the gift shop at the hospital at 12 noon on May 7. All proceeds will go towards purchasing medical equipment for the hospital.

St. John's Anglican Church will celebrate Earth Sunday (April 18) with a presentation from Major Greg Gardner during sermon time. He'll talk about some of the district's initiatives to create a more sustainable community and acknowledge the role that faith communities can play as environmental stewards.

Then The Environment Committee of St. John's Anglican Church is sponsoring an evening on Thursday, April 29 at 7 p.m. entitled Why Should People of Faith care about the Environment? In every faith tradition, the Earth is sacred because God created it. We are all called to be stewards of creation.

Art classes started this week at Brennan Park Recreation Centre with local art instructor, Mike Sherlock, conducting classes for all ages and experience levels. Mondaysm it is watercolour painting from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and drawing and painting for young people (ages 10 to 15 years) from 4:45 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesdays is Create your own Art Journal from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Painting in Acrylics from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Drawing and painting in pen, ink and watercolour classes are from 7:15 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays. A bus trip for seniors is planned for Wednesday, April 28 with a fun and interesting day to Granville Island. The cut-off date is Saturday, April 24. Also, a tentative trip to take in the Stars on Ice show at GM Place for an evening performance on Friday, May 14 is planned if enough folks are interested. The cut-off date is Saturday, May 1. The Howe Sound Women's Centre is holding their 4th annual silent auction and fundraiser at the Cliffside Pub in Valleycliffe on Saturday, May 1. I'll have more details next week.
