'Olympic legacy' event set

This evening (Thursday, Feb. 6) at 7 p.m. the "Light an Olympic Legacy" event takes place at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre (BPRC), just hours before the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

A torch procession from the BPRC to the end of Raven Drive is your chance to wave your Canadian flags and to wear red mittens and your 2010 volunteer jackets or other Olympic wear. It is also a time to rekindle the magic of 2010 with your friends and neighbours. Remember to take along a flashlight or headlamp. The legacy bonfire will be lit and everyone will enjoy hot chocolate and cookies. If you would like to make your own torch, please arrive by 6:30 p.m.

Another popular Family Pancake Breakfast is planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Sunday (Feb. 9) from 8 to 11 a.m. The breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, ham, sausages with coffee or juice with the regular price $6 and the hungry man breakfast at $8.

The next Squamish Public Library and Quest University Canada lecture series talk will be occur on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Dr. I-Chant Chiang is the guest lecturer and her topic is "How Children Learn Language."

To celebrate Feb. 14, a Valentine's Day breakfast is planned at the Squamish Seniors Centre on that date from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Enjoy eggs Benedict, hash browns and coffee, tea or juice with a full order $10, and half order $7. Please purchase tickets by Wednesday (Feb. 12). Mike Sherlock will put on a mixed-media art class focusing on watercolour and acrylics as the primary media to paint familiar objects and scenes that surround us in a new and unfamiliar way. Classes are Tuesdays (Feb. 18 to March 11) from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and in the evening classes are from 630 to 8:30 p.m. Morning and evening classes are $90. Please note, the Squamish Seniors Centre will be closed on Monday (Feb. 10) for Family Day.

The Howe Sound Drama Club History project has more than 30 large-format photos from 35 years of drama club plays and musicals placed in the Artisan Café windows on Second Avenue across from the Squamish Library. This was a joint venture by Doreen Ramus, Eric Andersen and committee members.

The Squamish Environmental Society will meet on Sunday (Feb. 9) at 8 a.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub for the monthly bird count. On Thursday (Feb. 13), the Women's Lunch in Support of Afghan Women is scheduled at the Hotspot on Cleveland Avenue from 1 to 2:30 p.m., hosted by the Squamish Community Learning Program Book Club. This is a chance to learn about the current state of women's and girls' rights in that country. The group wanted to do something to raise awareness as well as raise some funds to send to CW4Wafghan.ca.

It will be a Mardi Gras-theme luncheon at the Squamish Seniors Centre this month and it will be one week earlier on Thursday (Feb. 20). Tickets at $9 for members and $10 for non-members are now available. Exploring Mixed Media with artist Toby Jaxon will be held on Thursdays (Feb. 20 to March 6) from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. and the cost will be $94.50.

The Hilltop House Support Society will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday (Feb. 13) and interested members of the community are invited to attend.

Also on Thursday (Feb. 13), Nancy Warwick from Squamish Public Library will be at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence at 2:30 p.m. with a display of interesting books and novels.

A knitting workshop is planned on Saturday (Feb. 8) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newport Market (Carina Gelato). The group will work on a Valentine shawl or your own project.
