One voter's 'dream team'

EDITOR,

This is the first time in a long while I've taken intense interest in city council and the mayor. I have compiled my "dream team" for the people to occupy those positions.

Mayor:

Rob Kirkham. It is great he has bank management skills and also part of the Chamber of Commerce. This means he knows money management and also has a vested business interest for the community.

Councillors:

Brad Hodge. He has IT experience, which is good if we want to attract tech industry to town as well as being a small business owner which means he understands the value of budgeting.

Sarah Braebrook. Financial being a strong suit, I also like the fact she sat on one or more boards that deal with women's and seniors' issues. This will ensure that our community well-being does not get lost in the political paperwork.

Eric Andersen. Sat on the Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee. I also like the fact he has knowledge of the forestry industry, which in my opinion needs to be brought back to Squamish, as well as transportation experience.

Douglas Neville. He has understanding with the outdoors, which is great for this area, someone to keep the outdoor aspect of Squamish working and viable is important, but also has IT experience. This, again, is great if we get tech-based industries looking to open in Squamish.

Ron Sander. I like his stance on the Oceanfront/Nexen lands that we need to look at other options besides residential living for those areas. Also like his stance on making those making the decisions in council and city hall accountable. I also like the way he wants to look at building and business permits are handled and cut some of the red tape.

Peter Kent. His experience with the movie industry is valuable as we do get a lot of that industry working here. I like his intense interest in matters of children and their development. I like also he is concerned with the issues with the police and fire departments, these people need looking after as well.

Accountability, keep an open mind, don't follow the crowd, and explore all avenues. Look for the best bang for the taxpayers' dollar, get rid of the excess, cut the red tape. Bring in industry and jobs. Most of all, tourism is not the only option for Squamish.
