Optimistic about waste

EDITOR,

Each North American person produces an average of 4.5 pounds of garbage every day. Canadians generate about 30 million tonnes of waste annually, 24 of which are discarded as waste. Landfill sites account for about 38 per cent of Canada's total methane emissions. With a per-capita average of 730 kilograms of waste produced every year, Squamish has a lot to do with these figures.

But in Squamish, we are very lucky - even unaware of these numbers, we are already turning the corner, and realizing the senselessness in thoughtless overconsumption and the resulting waste production.

In the past few months, Squamish has engaged in several waste reduction initiatives. Squamish CAN would like to congratulate the entire community for our collective efforts. A million thanks to:

The District of Squamish, for continued support and a partnership that works for all;

The Squamish Adventure Centre (SSC), for use of the wonderful facilities;

B.C. Hydro/PowerSmart, for endless encouragement and a very generous contribution;

Triack Resources Ltd, for priceless, selfless support and a forward-looking approach;

Carney's Waste Systems, for much-needed help on the ground and an open door to the future;

Squamish residents, businesses, students, musicians, volunteers for their efforts and participation, their unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and their open minds to positive change.

Ana Santos
