Editor,

We live in Vancouver and have camped in Squamish on a regular basis over the last seven years. Last weekend while staying at our favourite campsite in Paradise Valley, we were attacked by an unleashed pit bull.

The dog appeared out of nowhere and without breaking stride attacked our year-old leashed Goldendoodle, went for our four-year-old daughter and then went back for a second round at our dog.

The owner of this dog appeared with two other unleashed dogs and said: "I don't know why you are getting so upset. This is what dogs do." He and his girlfriend then took off.

Incredibly shaken, we took our injured dog to Alpenlofts Veterinary Hospital. The clinic had closed for the day but Dr. Grewal remained on site to repair the damage (which required a general anesthetic and an overnight stay), for which we are very grateful.

We were encouraged to file a police report, which seemed a little pointless given we only had a description of the owners and dogs involved.

Following up with the RCMP proved to be the right call as they file a report with the SPCA, which is then listed in their database. Given the behaviour of the owners and pit bull, this dog has attacked before and will again.

While we won't remember this weekend as fondly as other great experiences we have had in Squamish, it is the actions of Dr. Grewal and his staff that reinforce the community kindness that we have enjoyed for many years.
