Outdoor movie night to wrap up summer

The school bells will ring out on Tuesday (Sept. 3) and motorists are reminded to heed the speed limit while in a school zone.

The Squamish Quilters Guild meet on Wednesday (Sept. 4) at 9:30 a.m. at the Sandman Hotel, where members will work on their own projects or help sew a community quilt and socialize on a drop-in basis. The meeting portion of the day runs from 7 to 9 p.m., and the program for the meeting will be a Trunk Show presented by Marg Malow. The guild meets the first Wednesday of each month and welcomes any person who enjoys sewing or sharing textile interest. New and interested members are welcome for a $5 fee at the door. Between Shifts Theatre is holding auditions for the play A Christmas Carol and you are invited to the Sea to Sky Hotel tonight (Thursday, Aug. 29) at 7:15 p.m. The production hits the stage at the end of November and the beginning of December. The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (Sept. 4) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for grocery distribution. The food bank plans to participate in the B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive on Sept. 21. This is a province-wide, community based, interfaith initiative to support food banks. All donations collected in our community will go to the local bank. Volunteers are needed to make this food drive successful and Squamish will be divided up into a number of routes. The monthly Acoustic Jam will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Sept. 1) from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

Mark your calendar for Saturday (Sept. 7) when the 10th annual Brackendale Fall Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 50 vendors will be on site and hay rides, zucchini races, great food and more including lots of entertainment will make for a great day. On Sunday (Sept. 8), plan to celebrate Grandparents Day at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue when grandma, grandpa and grandchildren are invited to a tea and magic show featuring Peter Rooke at 1:30 p.m. Drop by the residence tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 30) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a hot dog, chips and juice for just $2.

The Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital will have a booth at the annual Fall Fair on Sept. 7 and members will be selling raffle tickets to be drawn at the Christmas Bazaar in November. The tickets are three for $5 and the prizes are: $300, $200 and $100, with proceeds of the raffle going towards purchasing hospital equipment.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Seniors Society's annual fall barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 9 p.m. and the price is $10. Exercise classes for all levels begin next week and registrations are now being taken.

The annual Paws for a Cause Walk and fundraiser sponsored by the Squamish SPCA is planned at the O'Siyam Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can register at the walk or go online at spca.bc.ca/walk and, there are special perks for those who register online.

Organizers of the Squamish Breakfast Program are looking for volunteers to help deliver breakfast to students at Squamish's elementary schools this school year. Sea to Sky Singers invite new and former members to join them for an enlightening fall term. The non-audition adult choir's fall term will feature a number of multi-cultural songs and culminate in a December concert to celebrate the winter season.
