I would like to thank you for the story on the Mamquam Blind Channel ("Prior eyes Blind Channel walkway," Chief, Oct. 11). Did you know that over the last 20 years there have been five reports that refer to the channel and the importance of waterfront access for a vibrant downtown? The district has been doing a great job in showing support for different amenities such as the rec centre, soccer fields, baseball fields, SODC, railway heritage park, trails, mountain bike, walking and hiking, to list a few. There have been grants, tax breaks and general support.
For some reason we cannot seem to move forward on the No. 1 fix for the downtown. This may be the time to build some bridges with the adjoining property owners along the Blind Channel, look at how we can get some win-win situations here. Make access an economic driver for all landowners. The district must lead in making a process that works for all (seek and ye shall find). If you are interested in this topic, ask the district for a link to the Downtown 2000 plan (not the 2003 update). This document spells out a very relevant plan with direction. Also, the 1995 flood management plan gives direction to proceed with a temporary dike. I know to some a temporary dike seems like a waste, but it has been 20 years since we started this process. I am afraid that if we don't do something soon it may take another 10 years before we are enjoying this community amenity. Every road in downtown Squamish is a dead end - OR,every road in downtown Squamish is the entrance to a beautiful loop trail network. You choose.
