Plan a stay-cation in Squamish

It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago. No, no - it's all right. You were busy and it slipped your mind. I understand, and besides, I don't usually make a big deal out of my birthday anyway.

It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago.

No, no - it's all right. You were busy and it slipped your mind.

I understand, and besides, I don't usually make a big deal out of my birthday anyway.

My wife, on the other hand, always likes to plan something different every year for me.

Despite all my hints about action figures, superhero props and video games, she really likes to give me experiences instead.

One year we went sea kayaking around Vancouver Island - seals popping their heads up curiously around us as we went - and another time we went horseback riding for four hours through some awesome forested trails.

In hindsight - pun totally intended - we both agreed afterward that a two-hour ride would've been just as good, and probably much better for our posteriors.

But it was awesome, and I got to try out my "Man-With-No-Name" Clint Eastwood cowboy impression - although to be honest it would've been more menacing had I not been wearing a golf shirt, Bermuda shorts and white tube socks with sandals.

This year, because my folks were out visiting and both my 60-something-year-old mother and I are nervous about heights, my wife decided to give us all a tour of Sea to Sky country by air in two little tiny Cessna airplanes.

I've been up in small planes and helicopters before, and once I'm up there, it's all good - mostly because at that point it's not like you can walk out on the whole thing - but I'm always hesitant leading up to a flight in a small aircraft.

So my initial reaction was, "So, my birthday present is to scare me witless?"

Although I think I used another word that rhymed with witless, to be honest.

But everyone - from my young daughter to the aforementioned nervous grandmother - was into it, so I went along because I did actually want to shoot a few aerial photos and also to not look like a big chicken.

She booked the flight with Glacier Air, and I can tell you it was another awesome birthday experience.

I saw parts of Sea to Sky I had never seen (like a still-frozen Lake Lovely Water) in the decade or more I've lived here.

Our pilot, Francois, made it a fantastic and memorable flight, and everyone - including my fearful mom - came back expressing superlatives and saying they would never forget the experience.

After we landed, Francois commented that few locals actually took the flight tours they offered.

That got me thinking about how every year my family went away for a vacation somewhere to enjoy unique experiences, and yet there were so many incredible things right here in Squamish that I hadn't taken advantage of yet.

I've never tried windsurfing or rock-climbing - and there are hiking and biking trails out there I've never even heard of yet.

There are tours and guides galore, and tons of experiences you've probably never thought of doing in Squamish.

So, this year, like me, maybe you should consider a "stay"-cation in Squamish and check out all the area has to offer.

There's no packing, no customs to go through, and your accommodations are guaranteed to be very homey.

You can't have it all though, unfortunately.

My wife refuses to let me install a hot tub in the middle of the living room, for instance - but maybe that's something to hope for as next year's birthday present.

But we'll probably go bungee jumping.
