A Seniors Health Fall Seminar series begins at the Seniors Centre on Tuesday (Oct. 8) from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Many seniors are probably more frightened of losing their mental health than their physical health. The workshop will concentrate on ways people can contribute to their own mental health, ways in which the brain can be stimulated to remain healthy. A Saturday morning for all the family to enjoy will take place at the Squamish Public Library on Saturday (Oct. 5) starting at 10:30 a.m. It will feature singer/songwriter Sheree Plett and she will include some of her own songs as well as some old-time favourites. October is Canadian Library Month and many other interesting and diverse free events are planned for all ages this month.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Squamish is very involved in our community. At this time, there are many Big Sisters in waiting to be involved with a Little Sister. However, more Big Brothers are needed for those Little Brothers waiting for a match. Are you able to give one hour per week for the Adults in School mentoring program? Re-Fit Active Aging Circuit is a program offered in partnership by Recreation Services and Vancouver Coastal Health for seniors. The program will focus on cardiovascular health, balance, strength and flexibility and will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. It will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and the cost is $104 (plus tax). Financial assistance is available for those who qualify. If you are over 69 years of age it is required that you have medical clearance from your physician. You can register at the Recreation Centre, the Seniors Centre or visit squamishlive.ca and search under the adults 50+ sports, health and fitness' section.

Mental Illness: Recovery and Treatment is being presented by the North Shore Schizophrenia Society Family Support Centre on Tuesday (Oct. 8) at 6:30 p.m. at the Squamish Public Library. Panellists include psychiatrist Dr. Apu Chakraborty, Carole Caddey from the FORCE Society of Kids' Mental Health, Amanda Schell, 2011 Courage to Come Back Award recipient and Kennedy Baker, the founder of STAND. They will share information about mental illness, personal stories and how and where to get help. Admission is free.
