'Quilt Sew Day' coming up

As it is back to school day for students on Tuesday (Sept. 6), motorists are reminded of the speed limit in school areas. They may not admit it, but I think most children are happy to be going back to school.

The Squamish Valley Quilters Guild will meet at the Best Western Hotel in the Industrial Park for a Community Quilt Sew Day on Wednesday (Sept. 7) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In the evening, the meeting will take place from 6:45 to 9 p.m. New members interested in sewing will receive a warm welcome. On Thursday (Sept. 8), the Squamish Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue. The guest speaker will be Sansu Chen, the digital historical archive project manager at the Squamish Public Library. She will give an update on the archive project and also give a quiz to the members. Everyone is invited to attend. Sansu Chen's project at the library will end in October.

The 17th annual Brackendale Fall Fair will open its gates on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it promises to be an exciting day. To date, more than 70 vendors have signed up to sell and display their wares. The day includes music, hayrides, mini golf, farm animals, food concessions and more.

How exciting it was to know that our own Emma Pedersen won the Pacific National Exhibition Star Showdown. You have a beautiful voice, Emma, and good luck to you as you compete in the Canadian Youth Talent Competition in London, Ont., in November.

The healthy brain group for adults will meet at the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Ave. on Tuesday (Sept. 6) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. If you wish more information, please contact Delores Stewart at (604) 892-6400.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers on Wednesday (Sept. 7) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Ave. Residents are reminded of the Food Drive in our Community on Saturday (Sept. 17).

All exercise programs for Levels 1, 2 and 3 resume at the Seniors Centre next week and registrations are still being accepted. Paint-and-Sketch is each Wednesday at 10 a.m. and Pickle Ball is each Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The Hilltop House Support Society will meet on Thursday (Sept. 8) at 9:30 a.m. and new members are always welcome.

The WOW Riders will meet at Canadian Tire at 10 a.m. on Monday (Sept. 5) for a ride through Brackendale. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715. On the group's last ride in Coquitlam, they encountered a large black bear on the trail and the riders quickly retreated to another trail!

On Tuesday (Sept. 6), the Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the Canadian Tire at 9 a.m. to hike the Elfin Lakes (21 kilometres). For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

The Tantalus Walking Club is asked to meet at the end of Westway (Cherry Drive) in Valleycliffe for a Doris' Trail walk on Thursday (Sept. 8) at 10 a.m. For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.
