Base Camp: 40 Days on Everest is a book written by Dianne Whelan and the author will be at the Squamish Public Library next Thursday (May 1) at 6:30 p.m. to present an engaging slideshow and talk. Dianne is also the maker of the award-winning documentary on 40 Days at Base Camp as seen on the Knowledge Network. Admission is free and the author will have her books for sale.

A special musical treat is in store for residents on Saturday (May 3) at 10 a.m. at the Squamish Seniors Centre when the musical talents of the Victoria School of the Arts 36-strong high school choir will perform a variety of jazz standards with some pop and gospel music mixed in. The choir is directed by Bruce Cable, who said songs will also include Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, My Romance and Shed a Little Light. The Refresh Market is being held at the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Saturday (April 26) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The talents of many in our community will be on display and the day will also include a festival-family fashion show, studio photos and more. Organizers Shannon Lorenz and Rachel Boguski said there will be something for all ages to enjoy. Admission is $2, with proceeds to the Squamish Helping Hands Society. Big Buddy Book Time takes place each month at the Squamish Seniors Centre when the Squamish Elementary School students in kindergarten and Grade 1 come to the Squamish Seniors Centre to have seniors read to the children. The next date is Tuesday (April 29) at 2 p.m. and it is hoped many folks will participate.

The seventh annual Hike for Hospice happens on Sunday (May 4) and it is co-sponsored by the Squamish Hospice Society and the Squamish Rotary Club. Onsite registration at Brennan Park starts at 11 a.m. with the hike starting at 1 p.m. The Squamish Hospice Society is a volunteer organization that actively promotes support directed towards improving the quality of life for the dying, their loved ones and the bereaved in the Sea to Sky community.

Raffle tickets will be available for the Spring Mother’s Day draw sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital at Wal-Mart on Friday and Saturday (April 25 and 26). The draw for the cash prizes of $250, $125 and $100 will take place at the gift shop at the hospital on May 9.

Many residents will remember Johnny Peterson, who lived here for many years and always had a smile on his face and was willing to help anyone when asked. For the past several months John had been in the Capilano Care Home in North Vancouver. Sadly, he passed away on April 14.
