Remembrance Day services set

(((drop cap))) Do remember when retiring tomorrow night, Saturday (Nov. 5) to turn your watches, clocks, etc., back one hour as daylight savings time comes to an end.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 along with members of the Air Cadets and Sea Scouts will be in many areas of our community for the annual Poppy Days today, Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 4 to 6). Your support of the Poppy Fund assists veterans and families, youth and seniors organizations and many other worthy causes.

The next edition of The Chief is Friday (Nov. 11) and perhaps you won't get a chance to read it before the annual Remembrance Day service is held at 11 a.m. at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Here is some information about the service. The parade will be led by the Legion Colour Party, Sgt-At-Arms Ryan Pedersen and the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe Band. Also participating will be Air and Sea Cadets, RCMP, firefighter, ambulance and conservation personnel, and Scouts and Guides. Please be seated no later than 10:45 a.m.

The guest speaker will be Jane Swatridge, the executive assistant to MP John Weston. Clergy taking part will be Legion Padre, Rev. Wendy Eyre-Gray and Rev. Karen Millard. The Sea to Sky Singers and the Youth Choir will lead the singing.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Nov. 11, MP John Weston will be at the Royal Canadian Legion to present Welcome Home Letters to the parents of two service personnel who have served in Afghanistan. Edward and Madelaine Robertson will receive the letter on behalf of their son, Warrant Officer Russell Robertson, and Susan Timms will accept the letter on behalf of her son, Capt. Michael Timms.

A Tea and Quilt Show will be held at Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 5) from 1 to 4 p.m. The $10 admission includes the viewing of beautiful quilts and handiwork, and delicious dessert and coffee. There is also a mini market and bake sale.

On Wednesday (Nov. 9), the Caregivers Support Group will meet in the Seniors Centre from 2 to 3:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Donna Howard or Nadine Goodgrove at (604) 892-6400.

Seniors are invited to an All-Candidates meeting at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Nov. 10) from 1 to 3 p.m. This is your opportunity to ask the candidates questions relating to seniors issues in our community. To date, most of those running for office on Nov. 19 have indicated they will attend.

There are still appointments available for the Screening Mammography Program that is coming to the Squamish Renaissance on Third Avenue from Monday (Nov. 21) to Thursday (Dec. 1). It is estimated that one in nine women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Eligible women can call 1-800-663-9203 to book an appointment.

The monthly Acoustic Jam at Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Nov. 6) from 7:30 to 10 p.m. is open to anyone who loves music, singing, and just listening.

Tickets for the annual Senior Citizens Christmas Banquet set for Friday (Dec. 2) went on sale at the Seniors Centre on Tuesday (Nov. 1) at $15 per person. The tickets go very quickly so if you haven't picked up yours as yet, do it soon!

A Hearing Aid Clinic sponsored by Siemens Accostica Hearing will be held in the Seniors Centre on Wednesday (Nov. 9) from 12:30 to 2 p.m. It is free for members but there is a fee of $2.15 for non-members. An Art and Gift sale is planned at the centre on Thursday (Nov. 24) and tables are available at $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Please book in person at the centre at 1201 Village Green Way.

The Squamish Historical Society is presenting an evening at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (Nov. 12) at 8 p.m. when the guest will be Don Grant, the archivist for the Hollyburn Heritage Society in West Vancouver. He will show and narrate a film by mountain photographer Hugh Aikens on Garibaldi Provincial Park and local mountain ranges, shot between 1945 to 1972.

This year, the Women's Auxiliary (WA) to the Squamish General Hospital gave almost $26,000 to the Squamish Hospital and Hilltop House for equipment and patient care comfort. The WA is looking for new members and a chance to find out about the WA would be at its annual Christmas Bazaar and raffle on Saturday (Nov. 12) at the United Church. More details next week!

A night of bingo is planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Nov. 7) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Hilltop House Support Society will meet at Hilltop on Thursday (Nov. 10) at 9:30 a.m. when new members are always welcome.

Church on 99 is presenting an event titled "Beautiful in God's Eyes: An Evening for Women" next Wednesday (Nov. 9) starting at 6:30 p.m. at the church. It will include visits from various vendors and tips on makeup, jewelry, skin care, weight loss, etc., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. For information, please contact Janice Brown at (604) 815-9994.

Weather permitting, the last ride of the season for the WOW riders will take place on Monday (Nov. 7) at 10 a.m. with members meeting at the Canadian Tire parking lot. The potluck wind-up will take place on Nov. 14. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at Coho Park at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 8) for a Coho Park/Covenant Trail hike. Call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

Members of the Tantalus Walking Club are asked to meet at the first yellow gate on left, south of Brohm Lake for a walk at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Nov. 10). For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.
