'Romancing the Stone' planned at mine museum

A special Valentine's Breakfast at the Cloak Tower Café in the Seniors Centre on (Feb. 14) will feature eggs benny, hash browns, coffee, tea or juice for $8 or a half order for $6. This will be the special for the day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are of course many other items on the menu and all ages are invited.

Keeping with the Valentine's theme, the Britannia Mine Museum is featuring a themed underground experience (Romancing the Stone) on Monday (Feb. 14) followed by a fantastic three-course dinner (including a glass of wine) at the popular Burrow Café on Tantalus Road in Squamish. There are two start times at the museum, 6:30 or 7 p.m. The cost is $110 per couple (plus tax and gratuity) and tickets are available at the Burrow and at the Mine Museum.

The Squamish Community Foundation and the Squamish Public Library are presenting a free lecture on Estate Planning on Thursday (Feb. 17) from 7 to 8 p.m. at the library. Join Ian Davis of Race and Co. to discuss estate planning, estate planning tools and effective charitable giving.

On Sunday (Feb. 13), the Squamish Environmental Society will meet at 8 p.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub. This month the group will be looking for early spring migrants including robins, three of four species of blackbirds and other species. The Squamish Historical Society is sponsoring another meat draw at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Friday (Feb. 18) from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $1 or three for $2. The kitchen will be open during this time.

Bus trips for seniors are being planned including a trip to Vancouver on March 13 to see Cirque du Soleil performances at the Rogers Arena. The cutoff date is Feb. 27.

Trivia Night on Saturday (Feb. 26) is a fundraiser sponsored by the 2011 grads at the Howe Sound Secondary School. It will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. in the multipurpose room and there will be team and individual prizes. It is just a year since the 2010 Olympics were held. There is a chance for you to share your memories on Thursday (Feb. 24) when the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 hosts a special evening including looking ahead to the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Corridor residents David and Rosemary Malaher will share their experiences of visiting Sochi. The evening will include a delicious dinner and the cost is $20 per person with tickets available at the Legion.

An intensive course for family members of the seriously mentally ill (schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and anxiety disorders) will be held on each Tuesday at 7 p.m. until April 26. The South Asian Senior Women's Group meets each Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On Feb. 17 and 24 they will meet at the Seniors Centre.

Further to our mention last week of the Robbie Burns Night and Dinner hosted by the Mount Garibaldi Lodge No. 127 on Jan. 29, part of the proceeds from the gala event, attended by about 250 people, will go to the Squamish Hospital Foundation for future needs at the hospital. Mention of that aspect of the event was left out because of space considerations.

A Community Forum on Elder Abuse will be held at the Seniors Centre on Thursday, March 10, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Expert panelists and current information on issues including the legal rights of older adults, the laws, and available community supports will be discussed.
