The Squamish Environmental Society will hold its first bird count for 2011 on Sunday (Jan. 9), when participants are asked to meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 8 a.m. This month the birders will be looking for wintering ducks such as goldeneyes and buffleheads. The Squamish Public Library and the Quest University Canada lecture series continues on Thursday (Jan. 13) from 7 to 8 p.m. Dr. Negar Elmieh will speak on "The Shift in Infectious Diseases: From the Global to the Local Perspective." Dr. Elmieh is an advocate for health and environmental issues and is fascinated by science communication. She has lived on four continents and speaks five languages.

A date to circle on your calendar is Saturday, Jan. 22, when the Squamish Rotary Club is sponsoring a Rotary Pub Trivia Night at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 277. Tickets are $30 each and include dinner. Teams will be made up of four to eight people and you are invited to enter your own team. After presenting a wonderful Christmas concert in December, members of the Sea to Sky Singers are ready to begin rehearsals for their spring concert. The first rehearsal will be held on Tuesday (Jan. 11) at 7 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church. For the spring concert, director Veronica McPhee said the choir will be collaborating with visual artists in Squamish. An open house was held at the Squamish Seniors Centre last week but you are invited to stop by anytime and perhaps stay for lunch at the Clock Tower Café. Exercise classes resume next week and to find out which one would be appropriate for you, drop by the centre or call (604) 848-6898. The second Tuesday of each month, birthdays are celebrated with a piece of cake for everyone at the café and the next date is Tuesday (Jan. 11).

A Celebration of Life service for Maurice Carlson who passed away in Lions Gate Hospital last month will be held at the Squamish Funeral Chapel on Friday (Jan. 14) at noon.

The Adult Afternoon Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet on Tuesday (Jan. 11) from noon to 1 p.m. to discuss Stieg Larsson's book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. If you have read the book, you are invited.

The Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital thanks the community for their wonderful support in 2010 of their raffles, bazaar and gift shop. Because of your generosity, the auxiliary was able to buy equipment for the maternity unit for $200 and they have also donated $7,000 to Hilltop House.

In the Know, a monthly networking and information sharing session that aims to serve as a forum on parenting issues, is hosting a session on tax laws and credits next Wednesday (Jan. 12) at the Squamish Public Library.

Claire Shawcross, a Certified General Accountant, will speak via audio-visual podcast starting at 7 p.m. from BC Children's Hospital. Shawcross has six special-needs, adopted brothers and sisters who are now adults, and has explored the Canadian Income Tax Act with an eye toward assisting family members with the credits and deductions allowed under the act. The talk is sponsored by Families Organized for Recognition and Care Equity, the Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre and RBC Children's Mental Health Project. Admission is free.
