Scouting invitation

EDITOR,

If one stops almost anyone on the street in our town and asks them, they will tell you that Squamish is a great place to raise a child. There are a myriad of opportunities for recreation and sports here to choose from including mountain biking, soccer, baseball, swimming, and lacrosse, just to name a few. In addition, we know that none of the before-mentioned activities could even exist without a dedicated, enthusiastic group of people that volunteers its time and energy towards providing them to the youth of Squamish.

It seems that one of the best-kept secrets of Squamish is that there is also an amazing group of people in Squamish that offer a top-notch Scouting program to the youth of Squamish. These adults are nurses, business owners, and huge outdoor enthusiasts, who share something in common. They have been influenced by Scouting in some way, and wish to pass that on to their youth.

Scouting is co-ed, and brings together people of all ages, from all walks of life, to learn together in a spirit of fun and fellowship. It brings together little siblings, grandparents, pre-schoolers and teenagers to work together and learn about sharing, doing our best, and being prepared. During the time that I have spent in Scouting, I have learned that most, if not all, the adults involved in Scouting do so, because they are just big kids at heart.

As much fun as all of who are involved have with these amazing youth, we can always use more help. I wanted to remind the community of Squamish that if you know of someone who loves the outdoors, loves to learn how they can make a difference, volunteering their time as a Scout leader is a great way to go.

The Squamish Scout group is always looking for more help. We offer any training that you need, supplies, and support. The reward is wonderful, too - the laughter and joy on the faces of the youth that you get to spend time with. Beaver Scouts are for all children, ages 5 to 7, Cub Scouts, for ages 8 to 10, and Sea Scouts, for youth aged 11 to 14. Please email [email protected] if you are interested for more information.
