The membership drive for the new Squamish Seniors Centre gets underway next weekend. A dream is to become a reality as the centre will open its doors this fall at 1201 Village Green Way, on the lower floor of the Rockcliff building in the Solterra development in downtown Squamish. Annual membership is open to those who are 50 years of age or older for $25 and this is good until Dec. 31, 2010. If you are a current member of the Squamish Seniors Branch No. 70 and/or Tantalus Seniors Centre the fee is $20. Honourary membership applies to seniors who are 90 years of age or older.

Special tables and displays will be set up in Save On Foods on Friday, May 22 from 1 to 8 p.m. and at Wal Mart on Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to enable seniors to purchase their memberships to the new centre.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is having a Family Pancake Breakfast on Sunday (May 17) from 8 to 11 a.m. The price is right at $5 per person and $7 for a hungry man's breakfast. Along with pancakes, the menu includes eggs, sausages, ham and coffee or juice.

At the next session of the Healthy Brain Program at the Squamish Public Library on Tuesday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Dr. S. Kiraly will be the presenter and the topic of the day will be Stress Management. The monthly meeting of Squamish Branch No. 70 Senior Citizens Association of B.C. will be held at the Squamish Manor on Third Avenue on Tuesday (May 19). The potluck luncheon is at noon, followed by the business meeting at 1 p.m. For more information, please call June at 604-892-1574.

Hilltop House celebrates birthdays this month on Wednesday (May 20) at 2 p.m. when Margherita Iacovone, Bud Zorn and Randy Ferbey will be honoured.

The next meeting for the Squamish Public Library's Teen Book Club will be held on Thursday (May 21) at 6:30 p.m. The group will be discussing the book A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. This will be the last meeting before the summer break. Ready the book and join the teens for a fun discussion and some refreshments. On Wednesday (May 20) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The Squamish Gardeners are please to have Adam Gibbs, principal photographer for Gardens West magazine, as they keynote speaker on Wednesday (May 20) at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre. Tickets are 48 for members and $10 for non-members an dare available at The Bookshelf, Anna's Attic, the Adventure Centre, Garibaldi Nurseries and at the door.

Green Squamish (SECS) presents an evening of speakers at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Wendesday (May 20) at 7 p.m. Biologist Cam Finlay has been coming to Squamish for the last 10 years studying and banding the Rufous Hummingbirds. Ida Bacon is from the University of Edinburgh and she is studying the learning behaviour in hummingbirds. Following the presentations by these researchers, Stacy Bersavac, Community Action co-ordinator with the Canadian Cancer, Society, will speak about the campaign to get support to bass a bylaw banning cosmetic uses of pesticides. She said there is evidence that links pesticide use with cancer and birth defects.

Registrations are now being taken for the next set of Seniors Keep Well Exercises starting June 1 to July 20 from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. or 11 a.m. to noon. The Beginners Keep Well classes start June 2 to July 30 from 11 a.m. to noon. Our popular instructor is Sacha Molby and register for these classes at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

The 17th annual Star Search evening sponsored by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association will be held at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. Youths from Squamish will compete for cash prizes in music, dance, bands and instrumentalists. Funds raised will be donated to the AME (Access Music Education) fund and is a financial assistance program sponsored by HSPAA. The Cedar Valley Waldorf School invites everyone to their annual outdoor spring May Fair Festival on Saturday, May 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school at 38265 Westway Ave. in Valleycliffe. The day includes May Fair children's activities, artisan crafts, plan and bake sale and more.

Along with the membership drive for the new Squamish Seniors Centre, the fundraising committee is seeking donations to help furnish the centre. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the membership drive locations at Save On Foods and Wal-Mart from May 22 to 24. Please make cheques payable to the Tantalus Seniors Centre Society. Congratulations to Charles and Rosemary Schilberg, who are the grand prize winners in the Squamish Seniors Centre Naming Contest. A final selection draw was held as Yvonne Ramage and Muriel Shephard also chose the same name. Thanks are sent to all the seniors who helped with the contest.
