Seniors celebrate centre's opening

Over 100 seniors were in attendance on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when the new Squamish Seniors Centre was officially handed over from Solterra to the District of Squamish.

Over 100 seniors were in attendance on Wednesday, Sept. 16 when the new Squamish Seniors Centre was officially handed over from Solterra to the District of Squamish. Taking part in the ribbon cutting ceremony was Mayor Greg Gardner and an official from Solterra. Following this, a luncheon was hosted by Solterra. At the meeting, the Tantalus Senior Centre Society handed over their authority to the Squamish Senior Centre Society.

At the first annual general meeting the new executive for the Centre was elected with Glenn Rudkin as president, Harold Wilson, vice president, Muriel Shephard, secretary, Bill Berg, treasurer and nine directors.

There was a good feeling from those who were in attendance on Oct. 16 as they were most impressed by the new facilities. I was not able to attend but this past week, Carol Wynn, who is the new director of the Squamish Senior Centre gave me a tour of the facilities. From the state of the art kitchen to the large great room, to the other rooms for the arts and crafts, computer room, games room and more, I thought the long wait for our very own senior centre was worth it.

The first activity at the centre will be the Seniors Keep Well exercise classes starting on Oct. 5. There are 18 parking stalls including four handicap stalls in the underground parking facility.

Tomorrow (Sept. 26) the Squamish Historical Society is pleased to present Vancouver City Reflections at the Squamish Adventure Centre. The 53 minute film, produced by the Vancouver Historical Society, is based on the earliest known surviving footage of Vancouver, shot in 1907 by William Harbeck from the front platform of a streetcar as it made its way through the streets of downtown and the West End. Interestingly, the film includes footage of the same route in 2007 and news items from 1907 and interviews with film and streetcar historians. More on the intriguing life of filmmaker William Harbeck, who perished on the Titanic, is part of the film. There are three showings at 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and admission is by donation.
