Spring is here and the great outdoors is calling. We should all be sure to get outside and enjoy this amazing Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada that we call home. Bike to Work Week - starting Monday, May 27 - is a great place to start if you are not a regular outdoor enthusiast.
A great community is a community where everyone is considerate and respectful of each other. We behave in such a way as to ensure we cause no harm to others or our environment and don't act only in our own self-interest. The bottom line is be thoughtful and be safe. This behaviour cannot be legislated and cannot be enforced by bylaw officers or police. We could create an endless variety of laws and hire more and more bylaw officers and still be unsuccessful influencing behaviour.
Let's each do our part to contribute to Squamish being a wonderful liveable community that, day to day, is a great experience for all:
Make sure when we are parking that we are not parking in bike lanes.
Be sure to keep our dogs on a leash and under our control.
Carry our doggy bag until you reach a garbage can and avoid dropping it beside the path or the nearest tree.
Be sure to wear your bike helmet when out for a ride.
When riding or out for a walk at night, wear light-coloured cloths, lights and reflective gear.
Take unwanted items to re-use-it fair, recycle, or the landfill but not the nearest remote section of bush.
Over the next few months there will literally be thousands of visitors in town from all over the world. We all play a vital role in their experience once they get here. Each of us should consider ourselves ambassadors for Squamish. I encourage everyone to ensure that the welcome they receive and their experience while here is second to none so that they will want to return again and again and spread the word about what an amazing community Squamish is.
