Sign misnomer

Editor,

One wonders who were the bright lights behind the "Squamish Commercial Area" signs on the Sea to Sky Highway. There may be some rationale for the signs announcing the strip mall at Garibaldi Estates as being a commercial part of Squamish, but the sign on the southbound lane, half a mile to the north of the Cleveland Avenue intersection, is totally inappropriate.

Wouldn't "Squamish Towncentre" with directions such as seen on the old wooden northbound sign be a lot more informative? Not everyone coming down from Whistler is on a return trip to the Lower Mainland. Many international travellers make the approach to the coast from the north and know nothing at all about Squamish.

Do we want to give them the impression that the southern Squamish Commercial Area is just one more generic strip mall? This is indeed an odd way of promoting our downtown.

Perhaps next time the powers that signed off on this should consult the Squamish Nation for advice on highway signage, they seem to have some experience in that matter.
