Sikh parade brightens downtown

Tomorrow (June 26) is the martyrdom of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjun Dev Ji and between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. the Sikh community of Squamish will celebrate this anniversary with a street parade through downtown Squamish with associated short reading/verbal presentations at the pavilion site in downtown Squamish. The Squamish Sikh Society would be pleased and honoured if residents would join them in making the parade a memorable event. Guru Ka Langar means free and delicious food for everyone.

Thursday (July 1) is our chance to celebrate Canada Day in downtown Squamish at the old pavilion site and at Stan Clarke Park where the official flag raising ceremony will take place around 11 a.m. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 and the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe Band will lead off from the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company at 10:30 a.m.

Bring the family to the activities including a fun street carnival, live music, the cutting of the Canada Day Cake, arts and culture displays, market vendors and more. In the evening the popular fireworks display will end a great day of celebrations.

Another wonderful community event takes place at the Totem Hall on July 1 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. when groups of all nationalities are invited to come together and share their rich cultural backgrounds through food and dance and celebrate together. The Squamish Youth Centre is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Celebration tomorrow (June 26) starting at 12 noon at 1135 Carson Place, next to the Howe Sound Secondary School.

The official opening ceremony and dedication of the new CN Roundhouse & Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park will take place on Wednesday (June 30) at 11:30 a.m. and an invitation is extended to everyone.

There is much to do on Canada Day and you are invited to Britannia Beach as the community gets together to celebrate both the opening of the new Britannia Beach Volunteer Fire Hall and Britannia's history. Visit the quaint shops, enjoy cake, refreshments, fun activities and enter the fundraiser draw to support the volunteer fire association. The prize donated by artist Wanda Doyle, "Sunset on the Wharf" is a framed 10 x 24 canvas print. Tickets are available at the UpStares Gallery in Squamish, Earthly Crystals Gift Shop in Britannia Beach and from HSEFPA firefighters. The draw takes place at the Fire Hall dedication at noon hour.

The Squamish Food Bank is holding a bottle drive tomorrow (June 26) when all areas of the community will be canvassed. If you wish bottles or pop cans picked up, please call 604-848-4316.

On Tuesday (June 29) the Over the Hill Hikers will meet at 9 a.m. at government and Ross Roads to head out for a Whistler Bungee hike. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

This Sunday (June 27) the Squamish 2010 Garden Tour takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided tour includes gardens in Britannia Beach and Furry Creek as well as beautiful gardens in our own community. The Squamish Library, Adventure Centre, Billie's Bouquet, Anna's Attic, Garibaldi Nurseries and the Village Green Garden Centre have tickets at $15 each.

The WOW riders are going to be riding on the Whistler trails on Monday (June 28) and the group will leave from Canadian Tire at 9 a.m. You are welcome to arrange for your own ride or WOW will try to accommodate you at Canadian Tire. For more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

On Wednesday (June 30) the Easy Riders will meet at 10 a.m. for a ride along the estuary to the Nexen Lands. Call Shirley at 604-898-5715 for more information.

There are a few bus trips planned for seniors in the next few weeks. On Wednesday, July 14 a walk-about in Steveston should be of interest to many. The cut off date is Thursday, July 2. The Edgewater Casino and walk-about is set for Thursday, July 22 and the cut of is July 10. The bus trip to see Cicus Soleil in Vancouver is August 12 and the cut off date is also July 10. It is a couple of weeks away but please plan on attending the Pearl's 2nds fundraising garage sale on Saturday, July 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be some great deals and all proceeds go towards programs etc. at the Howe Sound Women's Centre.

The Multicultural Outreach Services (MOS) Program is a support group for immigrant and refugee women and is sponsored by the Howe Sound Women's Centre and is held each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Centre. This is an opportunity for newcomers to discuss issues related to settling in Canada. For more information on this program, please call Jas at 604-892-5748.

If you missed last month's book sale at the Squamish Public Library, you will have another chance as books can be purchased from July 2 to July 11.

The Squamish Emergency Program Society is holding a special general meeting on Wednesday (June 30) at 7 p.m. in the executive suites at the Garibaldi Springs Gold Resort.
