Silence is not complicity

Editor,

As a member of a community preparing to welcome the world in a few months, I was rather disturbed by an incident I witnessed at a local supermarket last weekend.

Three people noticed a man in Arab clothing. They ridiculed his garb and also made very inappropriate comments imputing unwarranted associations with terrorists. I was deeply embarrassed and angered by the comments I heard. I wish I had spoken out against those who loudly uttered these remarks. I fear my silence might be viewed as complicity.

These people may mistakenly think that we all share their narrow view of the world. To this Arab gentleman, I offer my sincerest of apologies. I hope that during the Olympics, those who hold some reservations about other cultures open their minds and join in the celebration of diversity.
