'Small school' deserves second look

Editor,

As we go through changes in the education system in Squamish, it is rather important to keep in mind the positive contributions of our schools rather than being guided by the dollar.

I have been fortunate to teach in every school in the district and am currently lucky enough to teach at Stawamus Elementary School.

Never have I seen a school where so few bodies accomplish so much - clearly no one ever told the staff, students and parents of Stawamus Elementary that "size matters."

The energy and competence displayed by the staff on a daily basis is admirable.

They take on a full coaching load, professional activities, offer clubs, trips and in-school events in addition to the regular busy schedule of a classroom so that students do not miss out just because they are in a small school.

The teaching assistants, teachers, support staff, administration and custodial staff have taken the idea of "team" to heart.

The students respond with enthusiasm and an energy that speaks volumes about being an equal player in the Squamish school system.

Clearly no one at the "little school up on the hill" ever believed that they should not be there.

There is tremendous value in the tight-knit, caring environment of this small school - particularly when "upsizing" and the "bigger is better" mentality is carrying such a weight in our current culture.

Stawamus Elementary has a strong family feel to it that works well and serves the Squamish community in a way that I have not seen in any other school.

Let's value these positive aspects and work together toward a successful solution.
