Smile!

Editor,

Much has been said in the Axeman debate recently. As most of us can acknowledge, a good healthy, spirited debate rarely disappoints and often produces a consensus that is in the best interests of the majority. Perhaps not always but often; hey nobody said the planet was perfect.

My viewpoint on this issue is simple: this Axeman thing is going to be here when we welcome the world to pass through our community for the Olympics; no amount of posturing is going to change this, so let's not argue about whether it's hideous, outdated, marvelous, incredible, or who knows what. Let's simply try to make it as appealing as we can.

The Olympic gloves that were added recently are a nice touch I guess, but is it too much to ask that we somehow have this guy smile?

I mean he is welcoming people to our town after all; is a smile too much to ask for?

Put another way, if we were starting from scratch and we were building him again with the sole purpose of welcoming visitors, is there anybody on the planet who would ardently advocate that his face features a large frown, eyes that shout 'I could care less' and an otherwise miserable, disinterested demeanor?

It's been written that if you build it they will come, but do we really want them to come and be embarrassed for us because we thought so little of our welcoming gesture that we could find a way - any way - to get the darn dude to smile?

Just asking...
