EDITOR,
Shame on Squamish District council for recommending that its contractual funding be cut to an already cash-strapped local SPCA. This local chapter cares for more than 300 lost, abandoned and abused animals per year. As a result of this proposal, they may have to close their doors.
The cost of saving these animals by maintaining the DOS share of funding? Approximately $2.50 per taxpaying household/business per year. The rest comes from the SPCA head office and the efforts of volunteers through fundraising activities.
The District of Squamish is currently spending vastly larger sums of money on "branding" our community in an effort to shine a positive light on our town. I doubt cutting funding to needy animals and then dumping them on the West Vancouver and Whistler animal shelters (as per a DOS proposal) makes us look very good to investors or tourists alike. Everyone agrees that maintaining budgetary responsibility is important, but this way?
Absolutely not!
